Interview with Sherri Sand and Book Giveaway!!

For our author interview today, we have Sherri Sand with us. She has graciously offered to give away a copy of her book, Leave It To Chance.

How long have you known you wanted to be an author?

Since I was about eight years old. I loved reading and decided early on that I was going to be an author. My brother even remembers that about me. If people asked what I wanted to be when I grew up I confidently stated that I wanted to be an author. That was before I decided I wanted to be an Egyptologist, an accountant and then a psychologist (I did actually get a degree in psychology).

When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?

Several things. First, I want them to have been entertained. I have a busy life, as most of us do, and I read to escape and settle into another world where my phone doesn’t ring, my kids don’t fight and no one needs my attention. I want my writing to create a place for them to escape to. But as we all struggle at times with different issues in our lives, I also want my writing to go deeper and maybe expose some of those areas, whether it’s a relational issue, past hurts or our perception of God. I want the readers to realize they aren’t alone in these struggles and that we all wrestle with something. Healing won’t come until we get brave enough to examine those issues.

Can you tell me a little bit about your book?

Single mom of three, Sierra Montgomery is desperate to find a new job to keep from having to move back home and be smothered to death by her mother’s good intentions and overbearing love. Then Sierra inherits Chance, a quirky old gelding that brings Ross Morgan, a handsome landscaper who happens to have an empty barn and fenced pasture, into her life.

But Sierra has a secret. She’s terrified of horses and wary of attractive men. Yet seeing the way her angry son idolizes Ross and adores that old horse forces Sierra to confront her fears and decide if she’s going to remain distrustful and self-reliant, or seek help from God and those who love her.

Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?

My husband and I love to travel, though with four kids we are a bit limited at the moment. I would love to visit Greece. We’ve been to Rome, but didn’t have time to visit the catacombs. I would like to see those, to walk where the early Christians walked. And I love any place that sunscreen is a requirement.

If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?

I think most people are interesting, so I’ve never had a desire to meet “famous” people, but I would enjoy having dinner with Corrie ten Boom and Jesus. I would love to talk to someone who experienced such horrors with such faith. And though I’ve been a Christian since I was young, my relationship with God is radically changing. I’m learning that Jesus is so much bigger than I thought Him to be and He has an incredible sense of humor.

What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?

The Crucifixion

Do you have a favorite hobby?

I love racquetball and eating chocolate (but not at the same time).

Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?

I’m pretty open, so I don’t think there’s much that’s secret. Though when we were traveling in Italy, I did order two desserts with every meal much to the shock of the group we were traveling with. Earned me quite a reputation. But my thought was that I may never get back to Italy, and as I love desserts, I wanted to experience as many as possible.

Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?

Be persistent and attend writer’s conferences (or at least buy the teaching CDs if attending isn’t an option). Davis Bunn said that if he’d attended conferences when he was learning to write, he likely would have cut seven years off his road to publication.

Any last thoughts for your readers?

Enjoy your journey. When I first started writing, getting published became my whole focus and I didn’t do a good job balancing my writing with my family and the other important things in my life. God was kind enough not to let me get published until he taught me that my value and identity did not come from being an “author.” Writing is something that I do, not who I am.
