Tim Chaffey and Teen Book Giveaway!!

As our second interview today, we have Tim Chaffey. He sent me a review copy of his book for teens, The Truth Chronicles, and I will be giving this copy away. So it will be slightly read. This is a very interesting book!! It is about Creation but in a style that teens will love to read:)

Thank you for being with us today, Tim!!
How long have you known you wanted to be an author?

For about five years. I had been teaching Bible and science classes at Christian schools for several years when God laid it on my heart to start writing down some of what I was teaching. I had already written scores of research papers so that’s how I started. Eventually, I decided to rework one of my research papers and write it in book form. This led to the publication of my first book (Old-Earth Creationism on Trial, co-authored with Dr. Jason Lisle). That summer I was diagnosed with leukemia and I felt compelled to write a book showing that despite all of the evil and suffering in the world we can still trust that God loves and cares for us (God and Cancer: Finding Hope in the Midst of Life’s Trials).

Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?

The Truth Chronicles books are what I like to call apologetics fiction. It’s an action/adventure series designed to teach young people how to defend their faith. It tells the story of four teenagers from America’s top science academy whose core beliefs are challenged by what they experience when they create a time machine and travel to the past. Along the way, they discover the world’s history is far different than they had expected and they are forced to examine their own worldviews and beliefs.

As a teacher, I’ve always wanted to help my students have answers to their questions and thought these books would be a creative way to do that. The books deal with many of the most-asked questions of the Christian faith and many of the tough issues teenagers faced by teens today. Some the issues we cover are creation v. evolution, the age of the earth, the Resurrection, dinosaurs and the Bible, Cain’s wife, racism, worldviews, the hypocrisy of modern “tolerance,” and much more. The Gospel is clearly presented in the second book.

The books are illustrated in the popular Japanese art style called Manga. Also, if there are any sci-fi fans out there, you may recognize several references to time travel and other popular sci-fi movies. Book 1 (The Time Machine) and Book 2 (The Contest) are already available. Book 3 (The Rescue) is due out by the end of June.

When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?

I want them to know that we can trust the Bible from the very first verse to the very last verse. This gives a person great confidence that their faith is not simply a leap of faith or stab in the dark, but instead is rationally defensible and supported by the evidence. After all, “faith is the substance of things hoped for, the evidence of things not seen” (Hebrews 11:1).

Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?

Last summer, my wife and I hiked through the Redwoods, so I can check that off my list. I would love to go to Israel so that I could have a visual in my mind of the various places as I read the Bible. I think that would make it come alive even more for me. It would be nice to throw Greece, Turkey, and Egypt into that trip, too, for the same reasons.

If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?

That’s a difficult question. Besides Jesus, I would probably choose Daniel and Paul. These men were willing to stand up for the truth in the face of any persecution. They are two of my heroes of the faith and I would love to just sit and listen to them expound on what they wrote.

What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?

There are several biblical events that come to mind first (Resurrection, Creation, Second Coming, etc.). Outside of those, I would love to be in New Zealand next year for the Rugby World Cup. I would love to take in an All Blacks game in their home country.

Do you have a favorite hobby?

Right now, writing is my hobby – I haven’t quit my day job. Beginning next month, I will be a writer/editor for Answers in Genesis and then I guess walking with my family or basketball would be my favorite hobby.

Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?

Although I’m one of the tallest guys around (6’9”) I was born on the shortest day of the year (Dec. 21st).

Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?

Write for God’s glory and not your own. It’s far more important to hear Jesus say, “Well done, good and faithful servant” than it is for the New York Times to put you on their best-seller list. Although both would be nice. J

Any last thoughts for your readers?

God means what He says and says what He means and He cannot lie. Therefore, we can have complete confidence in His Word. Read and study it daily and ask Him to guide you and teach you along the way.

I like to walk down the dirt roads near where we live. It's like being in the country and it's only a block away from giant housing tracts. There are a few horse and goat farms there.
