KATHI MACIAS & RED INK!!
Well, here is the kick-off for my event and the first author is one I have not had on here before but I have really enjoyed her books. So I am sure you all will be overjoyed to hear she is giving away a copy of her newest book, Red Ink. Kathi has a way of drawing you into the story and making you feel like you are right there. My favorite one of her books is No Greater Love, the first book in the Extreme Devotion Series. Believe me, I was in tears at the end of that one! Anyways, read through the interview, learn something new about this wonderful author, and have some fun:)
Thank you for being with us today, Kathi!!! How long have you known you wanted to be an author?
I’ve never wanted to be anything but a writer. I’ve always loved books and been an avid reader. When I was in junior high I told my then boyfriend (not husband) that I was going to be a writer some day.
Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?
The most recent release in Red Ink, book three in the Extreme Devotion series from New Hope (their first-ever venture into fiction). Red Ink is set in China and is loosely based on the true life of a courageous young woman named Li Ying, who is currently serving a ten-year prison sentence for printing/distributing Christian literature. I heard about Li Ying from Voice of the Martyrs, one of my favorite ministries, and I was struck by the fact that she was suffering because of doing something that I do on a regular basis. She is now on my daily prayer list. The other books in the Extreme Devotion series include No Greater Love (set in 1989 in South Africa, during the violence and upheaval that preceded the downfall of Apartheid) and More than Conquerors (set in the border town of Tijuana, Mexico, and also the Southern Mexican town of San Juan Chamula, where Mayan influence is so strong that “evangelicos” (Bible believing Christians) often “disappear” and are never heard from again. The final book in the series, People of the Book, is set in Saudi Arabia and deals with the issue of honor killings. This book will release in April. Immediately following, in the Fall of 2011, the next series in New Hope ’s “Fiction with a Mission ” line will begin releasing. The series is called the “Freedom Series,” and book one is called Deliver Me from Evil. This three-book set deals with the horrific crime of human trafficking.
When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?
With Red Ink, as with all my books, I want the reader to be challenged in his/her own faith—to realize how very blessed we are in free countries to worship our Lord and Savior without suffering or torture or even martyrdom, and to realize that not everyone enjoys that same freedom. Those of us who do must recommit ourselves to praying for and supporting our suffering brothers and sisters in any way we can. We must also be at the forefront of rescuing those who are caught up in tragic circumstances, such as human trafficking, which is modern-day slavery. The Church must rise up and BE the Church, and stoking the flame to do that is my goal in everything I write or do.
Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
Each time I’ve been set to go to Israel , something has happened that changed my plans. So yes, that’s my dream—to visit that wonderful country.
If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
Li Ying would be one. I so admire this courageous young woman who suffers for her faith! There are so many others to choose from, but I suppose Queen Esther would be at the top of my list—another courageous woman who was willing to put her life on the line in service to God.
What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?
I would love to have been in Israel in 1948 (the year I was born, by the way!) when Israel was “reborn” as a nation. What a miracle!
Do you have a favorite hobby?
Reading is at the top of that list, but also riding on the back of my husband’s Harley—hence, my “road name” of Easy Writer!
Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?
In addition to the fact I just mentioned (riding motorcycles), I have been deeply involved in prison ministry over the years, and even spent an entire day ministering on Death Row at San Quentin. I also interviewed Charles “ Tex ” Watson of the Manson Family and helped David “Son of Sam” Berkowitz write his prison memoirs. Both men are now committed Christians, ministering behind bars.
Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
Identify and pursue the individual dream God has placed in you. Forget jumping on someone else’s bandwagon! If you try to do that, you will probably discover that the bandwagon is so overloaded that the wheels are coming off by the time you climb onboard.
Any last thoughts for your readers?
