Well, in addition to my review today I also have a giveaway and an interview with author Valerie Goree. She is a Christian fiction author and her newest book, Deceive Me Once is going to be the prize in this giveaway:)
Thank you for being with us today, Valerie!! How long have you known you wanted to be an author?
Most times when I read a response to this question, the person says, "All my life". Well, not so for me. In Junior High School I had an English teacher who encouraged us to write but would then have us read our essays out loud, and would offer her critique in front of the whole class. This not only dampened my creative writing spirit, but squelched it for a long time. It wasn't until the mid-90's that I purchased a word processor-remember those old things?- and allowed the words to flow.
Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?
Deceive Me Once is a suspense set in South Texas. Maricell, known simply as Chella to her family and friends, has been living a life of deception in Hanson Ridge, Texas ever since the day of her quinceanera in Eagle Pass. Riddled with guilt over the part she played in the death of her parents, her best friend Eva, and Eva's parents, she stuffed it all down into the deepest recesses of her mind and moved on with her life.
Now, many miles away and more than 20 years later, it has all finally caught up with her. The body of a young woman is found on the edge of Chella's property. As she investigates the mysterious death, she discovers the woman is connected with her hidden past. Will Chella's dark secret finally be her undoing and ruin the life she has built with her husband and sons? Will they ever forgive her for lying to them all these years?
When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?
A theme throughout the book is forgiveness. Chella has to forgive herself, ask her husband for forgiveness, and seek forgiveness from God. Another thread highlights the fact that someone can attend 'church' for years, without having a personal relationship with Christ.
Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
I was born in South Africa, grew up in Rhodesia-now Zimbabwe. Since I married, my husband and I have traveled to Europe, Australia and New Zealand. Our next goal is to visit Israel in the near future. We want to walk the places our Lord visited so long ago.
If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
My hobbies over the year have changed. I used to make all my own clothes, even made my own wedding dress; I used to knit sweaters for the whole family. I've dabbled in acrylic landscape painting, and created cards using dried wildflowers from our property. Now I guess my hobbies would be reading and writing.
Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
The best advice I was ever given, was to keep on writing. After receiving the rejection or the critique full of red, the most natural thing to do is quit. But no one ever improved her tennis game by quitting. What advice is given to an athlete? Practice, practice, practice. So it is with writing. Keep on writing, attend workshops, study craft books.
Any last thoughts for your readers?
I know we all have our favorite authors, but every once in a while, give a new author a chance, and his or her debut novel.
And how can they connect with you?
I can be reached at firstname.lastname@example.org. To ensure a reply, please mention this blog. Deceive Me Once is available from ParsonPressPlace.com, Amazon.com and B&N.com
Readers, does that sound like a neat book or what! Valerie has mentioned a very good point in her last thought for readers. Take the time and read a book by a new author. That is one of the nice things in reviewing books, is not only the books by my favorite authors, but those new authors that I get to read their debut novels. I love them! I have found some new authors who I will be reading all their books to come(one of those is coming later during this event). Sure there are some debut novels I read that I wonder how that person got a book published, but that is very rare. I have only had that happen twice in my whole time of reviewing books. Please take the time to check out a debut novel! The authors will thank you and you just might find a winner:)
