Jane Kirkpatrick!! There is a giveaway associated with this review so read to the end.
Thank you for being with us today, Jane!!! How long have you known you wanted to be an author?
Just for the last 20 years or so. I loved to write as a child, wrote poems and essays and letters to the editor(in high school!) but I didn't think about being "an author" until I discovered a story that I thought needed to be written and I couldn't find anyone else to write it. That was in 1995.
Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?
The one coming out in April? It's called The Daughter's Walk and it's based on a true story of a mother and daughter who took a wager to walk from Spokane, WA to New York City in 1896. If they made it, starting with only $5 and working their way across the country on foot, they'd earn $10,000. The fashion industry hoped to promote their new reform dress with their walk, and they hoped to save their farm. What intrigued me was discovering that after they got back Clara, the daughter, changed her name and separated herself from her family for twenty years. Now there's a story, I thought! What happened and what eventually brought her home? It made me wonder about family schisms of all kinds and the journey and roadblocks to reconciliation.
When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?
The importance of stepping over hold hurts, to grow new flesh if you will, so they can maintain connections to family however that may come to be defined.
Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
Well, one was Ephesus in Turkey and I got to go there this past summer! What a thrill!! I'd like to see the pyramids and I'd like to walk in the Holy Land.
If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
Frederick Buechner(author, theologian) and Jane Adams(who inspired my pre-writing life as a clinical social worker for many years).
What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?
I would like to have traveled the Oregon Trail but on a wagon that made it!
Do you have a favorite hobby?
I love to read and walk my dogs. We have two. A Wirehaired Pointing Griffon and a Cavalier King Charles Spaniel.
Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?
Let's see, I have a pilot's license and I survived a plane crash(those are not necessarily related facts)!
Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
Become your own midwife..by that I mean learn to cheer along the way, small gains like finishing a chapter, attending a writer's conference, meeting with an agent or editor, even if nothing happens right then. Midwives don't wait until a baby is born, they're working all the way along. Get a cheering section and remember to cheer yourself.
Any last thoughts for your readers?
I hope they continue to find themselves inside my stories. I love hearing from them and discovering what the story had to say to them. It's often different from what it said to me and that's a delight.
And how can they connect with you?
