How long have you known you wanted to be an author?
I was bitten with the writing bug at age seven when I began writing Bible stories in my own words. My second grade teacher, Mrs. Vernon, holds a special place in my heart – it was she who encouraged me to continue writing about Jesus. In fourth grade, I began to write fiction stories about a dog named Muffie and her adventures, as well as other short stories neatly composed in homemade wallpaper-covered cardboard books.
Can you tell me a little bit about your newest book?
My latest book is McKenzie, the first in my Montana Skies Historical Romance Series. Here is a short blurb:
Desperate to save her sister from an abusive husband, socialite McKenzie Worthington responds to a mail-order bride ad in the Montana Territory---where God-fearing rancher Zachary Sawyer prays for a wife to share his life. But when McKenzie arrives with a plan that includes divorce, will Zachary's persistent kindness and self-sacrifice change her heart?
For the first time in years, Kaydie Worthington Kraemer can breathe easily. Although she is still haunted by memories of her abusive husband, Darius, she takes comfort in knowing the man is dead. Staying with her sister McKenzie and brother-in-law, Zach Sawyer, at their ranch, Kaydie is still wary of men, especially now that she has another life inside of her to protect. As she looks forward to her baby's birth, she builds a protective wall around herself that won't be easy to tear down.
Ranch hand Jonah Dickenson views his boss, Zach, like a brother. He does not, however, envy Zach's new role as a husband. Deserted by his mother at a young age and forever despised and rejected by his own father, Jonah has few close relationships. But there's something about Kaydie that draws him to her and makes him question his decision to remain a bachelor.
When Cedric Van Aulst, an old friend of Kaydie's, comes to town, an unforeseen prospect of marriage arises. Cedric is someone Kaydie trusts. Will she settle for a safe union with him, or can she trust God to guard her heart and her life in the arms of Jonah?
When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?
My hope is that readers will find in both McKenzie and Kaydie the power of God’s love, redemption, hope, and forgiveness. Readers will get a glimpse inside McKenzie’s life and see that God can and does change hearts. In Kaydie, readers will see that God has a plan for their lives and that He can heal what's been broken.
Who has been your favorite character to write?
I have really enjoyed writing the characters of Zach, McKenzie, Kaydie, Jonah, and Lucille. However, the character of McKenzie has been my favorite to write!
If you were relaxing, what two things would you absolutely have to have with you?
Hmmm. Let’s see…my family around me, my contemporary Christian rock music playing in the background, and oh, if it’s winter, add to that my plaid heated throw and fuzzy red slippers :)
What was the last book you read that made an impact on you?
The book of Acts in the Bible.
What is your favorite snack?
Popcorn with a touch of butter and salt!
Any last thoughts for your readers?
I just wanted to share with you something that really touched my heart recently. Every Christmas, we go caroling with my daughters' school and this year was no exception. We once again went to a home for disabled adults - some of them profoundly disabled. As I stood there watching my daughters and their classmates sing "Away in a Manger" and "Go Tell it on the Mountain," I noticed something that brought tears to my eyes.
One of the residents at the home was squealing from her wheelchair. Years-wise she was probably 25-30. Mental-wise she was probably 2. Yet, she squealed with delight and attempted to clap her thin hands at the sound of the children's voices. A man, sitting in a chair, began to rock back and forth and make a grunting noise - yet with a smile on his face.
My heart was touched and I felt the tears run down my face. My daughters and their classmates were bringing such joy to the residents of the home. Those residents were worshipping the Lord with my daughters and their classmates in the only way they knew how. It reminded me of Psalm 100, which in the NIV says “Shout for joy to the LORD, all the earth. Worship the LORD with gladness; come before him with joyful songs.”
What a reminder of how we can touch lives with something as simple as a song! Thank you for stopping by Charity’s blog. I hope you all have a blessed 2011!
