How long have you known you wanted to be an author?
I’ve wanted to be an author since I was a little kid. Even as an eleven year old, I was inspired to write novels. I’d get a couple chapters into it then stop because I got bored. When I was 15 I finally kept going long enough to finish one.
Can you tell me a little bit about your new book?
I think the back cover says it best…
Kate O'Brien can't believe her ears. She's been married, by proxy, to a man she's never met, thanks to her young siblings' meddling! Kate offers her "groom" room and board at her farm until the annulment is granted—nothing more. After all, what else could this predicament be but a blunder that needs fixing?
Nathan Rutledge arrives on Kate's doorstep, seeking a fresh start—with a family that needs his help more than Kate will admit. The shadows in both their pasts will be no match for a bright new beginning. But first, he has to convince a woman frightened of love to throw caution to the Texas wind…
When a reader gets done with your book, what do you want them to come away with?
I’d like them to come away with a smile and maybe a few happy tears. It is an incredibly romantic story about two less than perfect people who overcome their problems to reach their God given destiny. I want my readers to know that despite what we often see or hear in the media, true love is still an everyday reality.
On a spiritual level it’s that everyone contends with something in the faith but we cannot let our fears, failures, or foibles blind us to God’s plan for our lives. Instead, we must hope persistently, love courageously, and live joyously.
Is there a place you have always wanted to visit? A vacation spot, historical monument, overseas, etc?
I’d love to go overseas to Italy and France but first I really want to go on a tour of America. I’d like to see everything from the Grand Canyon and Yosemite National Park to the eastern seaboard and west coast.
If you could have dinner with 2 people, who would they be?
I’d have dinner with Helen Keller and Martin Luther King. I chose Helen Keller because she overcame so much to become an amazing speaker and writer. I chose Martin Luther King because he revolutionized America through love.
What one event would you love to be at? Historical or future?
I’d love to be at my graduation from college! It’s happening in May, Lord willing. I’ve had to take an extra year to finish because of some class scheduling conflicts so I’m more than ready to be done. However, I don’t want to miss this time in my life because God is doing so many wonderful things. I’m pretty content where I am in life but boy will I be excited at graduation.
Do you have a favorite hobby?
Other than writing, the other hobby I keep coming back to is dancing. I took ballet, tap, and jazz for seven years. I also learned a bit of hip hop. Most recently, I took salsa lessons for a few months.
Is there something about you most people wouldn't know?
I’d love to be in a musical. I don’t sing much in public now but I was in my university’s choir for a couple of years. As I mentioned before, I also love dancing. It would be so much fun to combine those two things.
Do you have any suggestions for the aspiring writer?
Keep writing! It sounds simple but I know it’s easy to get discouraged wondering if the day will ever come when you are published. Writing is something you have to pursue because you love it and can’t imagine not doing it. Honestly, publication is amazing but it’s also a ton of work and can be a lot of pressure. If you aren’t in it because you love it, don’t do it. If you love it, don’t give up. Keep writing.
Any last thoughts for your readers?
This is the first book about the O’Brien siblings. Sean’s story (the younger brother) will be out in July 2012.
