Heart's Safe Passage by Laurie Alice Eakes Blog Tour

Every so often an author comes around that I just wait with bated breath for their next book. Laurie Alice Eakes is one of those authors! Her books just bring characters to life and you feel so alive as you read them. The first book I ever read by her happened to be the first in The Midwives series. This book, Heart's Safe Passage, is the second novel in this wonderful series and I thoroughly enjoyed it!

It's 1813 and all Phoebe Lee wants out of life is to practice midwifery in Loudon County, Virginia. When Belinda, her pregnant sister-in-law, presses Phoebe to accompany her onto a British privateer in order to cross the Atlantic and save her husband from an English prison, Phoebe tries to refuse, then finds herself kidnapped.

Captain Rafe Docherty is a man in search of revenge. His ship is no place for women, but he needs Belinda in order to obtain information about the man who destroyed his family and his life. Between Belinda's whining and Phoebe's hostility, Rafe can't help but wonder if he made the right choice.
When it becomes apparent there is an enemy among them on the ship, the stakes are raised. Will they reach the English shore in time? Can love and forgiveness overcome vengeance?

Book 2 in The Midwives series, Heart's Safe Passage is a stirring tale of love, intrigue, and adventure on the high seas. Readers will feel the salt spray and the rolling waves as they journey with Laurie Alice Eakes's vivid characters on the treacherous path toward redemption.

MY REVIEW-Like I said above, Laurie Eakes quickly became one of my favorite authors after reading, Lady in the Mist. It is on my keeper shelf:) So when I saw this one I immediately put it on my wish list as a have to get book. And boy am I glad I did!! Heart's Safe Passage is a thrilling yet serious book that I fell in love with. There are some fun characters, including Tabitha and Dominick from the previous book. I personally like when an author brings back old characters. Sometimes that doesn't happen, even when it is a series.

I took to Phoebe very quickly. I think she overreacted at first on the ship but I understood her panic and worry. Not every day you get kidnapped and put on a ship at sea, especially when your sister-in-law is part of the trouble. I personally had a hard time with Belinda and felt like slapping her through the pages more than a couple times. Of course, that just goes to show a good writer. Rafe was a great guy and even though he had his times of being a pain, I really liked him. He is loyal to his daughter, even with the history behind that.

As with the last book, it was interesting to read about the midwife aspect back then. Phoebe helps deliver a baby on a ship and it was neat to read about. They were not as well received back then and they had their share of trouble, that's for sure. This book has a lot of history in it and it shows the culture and different way of life back in that time period. There is one part where Rafe is explaining why he no longer wants anything to do with God that was a bit descriptive for me. I know those things happened back then, but I would rather have done without it.

If you like a book with suspense, adventure and romance, this is the book for you. I love the way Laurie writes and makes you feel like you are out at sea with Rafe and Phoebe. Excellent book that I will enjoy re-reading time and time again!
