Interview with Candace Calvert and Signed Book!!

Today for the author interview we have Candace Calvert. She is the author of the new book, Disaster Status. These look like really interesting medical books:) And Candace is offering a personalized copy of Disaster Status to one of my blog readers!!

Thank you so much for being with us today, Candace!!

It’s a pleasure to be here. I love the opportunity to connect with you and your readers.

You seem to have been through quite a bit in your life. Has that helped you as an author?

Definitely. The “Triple Whammy” a few years back (unexpected divorce, flood, and then a life-threatening equestrian accident) actually inspired my first published work, an essay in Chicken Soup for the Nurse’s Soul. I think an author’s life experiences, both joyful and tragic, can add authenticity to a story and help to breathe life into characters. I’m certain there’s a bit of my DNA (and history) in the Mercy Hospital team.
When did you decide you wanted to write novels?

I’ve always written: short stories, journaling and so forth. And dreamed about writing a novel one day. After the Chicken Soup story was published, my husband immediately signed me up for an online writing class—completely to my surprise (and anxiety). He follows the Nike theory: “Just Do It!”

What do you most want to get across to your readers?

My publicist likes to say that I write medical “Hope Opera.” Sounds funny, but actually it says a lot about what I’m trying to do with my stories: offer action-packed, warmly romantic stories--with a therapeutic (and contagious) dose of HOPE. I love it when readers relate to my characters, saying things like “I’ve often felt that way too,” or “I think if she could learn to forgive, maybe I could.” Entertainment with encouragement. We can all use that.

If there was one person you could have dinner with, who would it be?

In this contemporary world, maybe Beth Moore. I love her energy and passion—and her great sense of humor!

Is there one place you have always wanted to visit? Overseas, a vacation spot, historical monument?

I have been truly blessed to have the opportunity to travel, and still pinch myself over some of the wonders I’ve seen: The Sistine Chapel, statue of David, Michaelangelo’s Pieta, Venice at night from a gondola—the pyramids from the top of a camel! But there are many places I haven’t been to in the U.S.New York is high on my list.

What one event would you love to be at? Either historical or future?

Oh that’s too hard; there are so many. I’ll keep it personal and say that I’d like to be around for the birth of our great grandchildren.

Is there something about you most people don't know? (A secret hobby, etc:)

I’m a “birder”; with a bird watching Life List, huge sacks of bird seed, a nerdy vest, several pair of binoculars. And I’ve been known to jump up and down and squeal with wild abandonment after spotting a new feathered find.

Can you tell us a little bit about this series?

Best-selling author Harry Kraus graciously described it this way:

“Finally, a reason to turn off ER and Grey’s Anatomy. Here is realistic medical drama with heart . . . page-turning prose, a heart-warming love story, and hope.”

Any last thoughts for your readers?

I have exciting news for folks who enjoying reading via e-books: Tyndale House will offer Critical Care (first book in the series) as a limited-time FREE download on Amazon, beginning on June 21st. Just go to the Amazon Kindle bookstore and search for the title. If you sign up for my newsletter (via my website), I’ll be sending out a reminder and a link to the free download.

In addition, I want to say a big THANK YOU to my readers for your encouragement and support. I’m blessed to have you “scrub in” with the Mercy Hospital series.

I LOVED Critical Care... It took me 8 hours to read it... ( I had to cook, shower, run errands or I would have had it read quicker!) I can't wait to read more. I hope to win the signed copy of Disaster Status..
