Book It! Program Encouraging Children To Read!

I am a big advocate of reading. Whether it is the old classics, a childhood favorite or a new book that is exciting. So when I heard about this program called Book It! I just knew I had to post about it. I am going to give some general info about it below and then tell you why I am backing it.

About BOOK IT!
BOOK IT! motivates children to read by rewarding their reading accomplishments with praise, recognition and pizza. BOOK IT! is simple for the teacher to use, flexible because goals match reading ability, and fun because achieving a goal is a great reason to celebrate. BOOK IT! was created in 1985 and currently reaches over 10 million students annually.

BOOK IT! runs every school year from October through March. The teacher sets a reading goal for each child in the class. A tracking chart and reproducibles are included to make it that much easier. As soon as a child meets the monthly reading goal, the teacher gives him or her a Reading Award Certificate.

BOOK IT! goals are based on reading ability. Number of books, number of pages, or number of minutes – they all work. BOOK IT! can also be used with the reading curriculum or as support for comprehension or intervention programs. For children not reading independently, the goal can be set where a parent or others read to the child.

Pizza Hut is proud of all BOOK IT! readers! The restaurant manager and team congratulate every child for meeting the monthly reading goal and reward them with a free, one-topping Personal Pan Pizza, BOOK IT! card and backpack clip.

Best of all, BOOK IT! materials are free to schools! Click here for enrollment and eligibility information.

I personally think our children do not read enough now a days. They are so stuck on the visual media and entertainment you can't get them away from the video game or the television set. But there is so much more for them out there! Books have a unique way of making them think and almost interact with the characters. They also can go to far different lands, make exciting new friends, and do things they might never be able to do in real life. Believe me, I have visited the old west, gone to China, traveled on a pirate ship and my favorite of all, lived in the time period of Anne of Green Gables:) And all of this was done through books. Our children are missing so much!

Pizza Hut is sponsoring America's Biggest Storytime featuring Tim Tebow reading his childhood favorite, Green Eggs and Ham by Dr. Seuss. How many of you remember this book? Whether you read it as a child or you read it to your child many of us grew up on Dr. Seuss:) This year your child can read along with Tim Tebow through this fun program. Book It offers children incentives to read through books. And let me tell you, the program looks great! I have gone and checked out the website and they have an area to register and enroll. It says you can also use this if you are a homeschooler!! I personally love that! Pizza Hut reading certificates and other prizes.

So, if you are interested in participating in the Book It! program, check it out. I am very excited about this opportunity for children and readers around the US!! You can check them out on Twitter and Facebook as well.

I agree, children need encouragement to read. It was a great escape for me as a child and the library was my favorite place to go as buying books was a luxury we couldn't afford.
