Kids Dressing Up: How to Make It Possible

Kids dressing up is a time-honored tradition that has been going on for forever because kids like to pretend they are grownups and do what grownups do. Every child should have access to a dress-up box, chest, bin, or bag. Dressing up is what imaginations are for. Dress-up clothes can come from grandma and grandpa’s old clothes, thrift stores, yard sales, mommy and daddy’s closet and drawers, and from costumes that are only worn on Halloween. Over time, a dress-up chest may end up having too many pieces in it and a bigger chest will have to be acquired or another chest or box.

One Dress-Up Box

In that chest or box, there could be your grandmother’s old-fashioned shoes, her hat with a feather, someone’s old gun holster that fits on a belt, a cowboy hat, and some cowboy boots. There might be a few dresses  for princesses so that a little girl can look like Cinderella in a blue dress; Snow White in a yellow, red, and blue dress; or another princess in a green velvet dress. There are feathered  boas, tiaras, a wedding veil, high-heeled shoes in a couple of colors, long white dress gloves for ladies, a blond wig, and a gnarly mustache.

Another Dress-Up Box

Someone else’s dress-up box might have an old mink coat and hat with some of the mink missing, a beret, a stove pipe hat, and a cane. A pop gun with a coonskin cap and leather coat would make any little boy feel like Daniel Boone. Somehow, a graduation gown and cap made its way into the box. There should be some knees-highs in there too, because they end up covering their whole leg just like their mommy’s panty hose. All you have to do is make the dress-up box accessible by putting it in a play room, kid’s room, or basement. Make sure you have your video camera charged so that when the you see your kids dressing up, you will be able to catch on camera their adorable faces and their attempts at mimicking the adults in their life along with all of the folk heroes and movie characters that they love.

How to Do Shore Fishing in Hawaii

If you ever have the fortune of visiting the Hawaiian Isles, don’t make the mistake of leaving without fishing. There is an endless assortment of beautiful tropical fish that grace the waters of Hawaiian beaches. You never know what you may get from a catch! You can fish through companies such as www.KonaFishGuide.com or on your own. Many people recommend fishing along the shoreline because you are allowed to fish anywhere here as long as you’re not doing so on private property or wildlife reserves. Also, you don’t need a permit if you don’t intend to sell the fish you catch. For the best ways to do shoreline fishing, follow these tips.

Technique

There are a variety of ways to catch a fish. The most traditional way is to use a tackle and bait. You may catch many small fish, but for the bigger ones, make sure you have strong equipment. Purchase a rod 12 feet in length as well as a high-capacity reel. A fishing line should be able to carry 12–20 pounds, depending on which fish you capture. Fishing weights are necessary so your bait can descend to the fishes at the bottom and to avoid your line blowing away in the wind. If you’re wondering what sort of bait you should use, go for squid, octopus, shrimp, eel, sand turtles, sand crabs, or small fish. Live bait is usually the most effective. If you prefer a method that requires less effort, try dunking. Simply place your rod upright in the sand after you’ve cast your line far out and return to the rod when the line tugs.

Locations

There are many places to capture fish when you’re on the shoreline. You can do this along the beach, in a kayak or canoe, on a dock, or along a low cliff. You’ll typically find more fish when you cast your line into reefy areas. A few examples of these fish include the parrot fish, unicorn tang, goatfish, and the gray snapper. You don’t have to go by the reef to get lucky, though. Sandy beaches offer a zoo of fish. Bonefish, spiny lobsters, octopuses, Kona crabs, moi, and stonefish are yours for the taking. For more ideas on fishing in Hawaii, visit www.KonaFishGuide.com.

ABOUT THE BOOK

Honour Metcalf’s quilting needlework is admired by a wealthy customer of the Boston Mantua-maker for whom she works. In need of increasing her earnings, she agrees to create an elaborate white work bridal quilt for the dowager’s niece. A beautiful design emerges as she carefully stitches the intricate patterns and she begins to dream of fashioning a wedding quilt of her own. When Honour is falsely accused of thievery and finds herself in a perilous position, merchant tailor Joshua Sutton comes to her aid. As he risks his relationships, reputation, and livelihood to prove her innocence, the two discover a grander plan—a design for love.

If you would like to read the first chapter of Pattern for Romance, go HERE.

MY REVIEW-I have to be upfront with you all. I had a hard time getting started with this book. I always have a hard time saying anything less than glowing about a book but I felt I had to be honest.  I have read a couple others in this series and enjoyed them, but this one was just slow getting into it. And it might have just been me. Once I got about halfway through I wanted to see how it ended so it did pick up a bit. The plot sounded intriguing and I enjoy the whole aspect of the quilting. I also loved the names of Honour and her sister Temperance, or Tempe. There is some suspense around the hero Joshua and why his engagement ended so quickly. I guess what took me a while was being thrown into the middle of it from the beginning and trying to figure out what had happened. It almost felt like there was something missing and some things felt rushed. Again, please pick it up for yourself as it could just be me. I don't want to stop anyone from reading the book but it was slow reading for me.

Bertolli Classico Olive Oil Review and #Giveaway!!!

Do any of you cook a lot? Well, if you do, this review and giveaway is sure to please. I recently was sent a bottle of the Bertolli Classico Olive Oil to try out with some recipes. I was happy about it because I use olive oil a lot with my grilling, sauteing, etc. Bertolli is a brand I use often and this new oil sounded like it would be a good fit for many recipes. Check out what I made below and then make sure to enter the giveaway:)

To try this out, I decided to make steamed broccoli with an olive oil drizzle. No, it was not just olive oil. But that is the main ingredient and I couldn't wait to see how it turned out. So I started the broccoli steaming, an excellent way to get the nutrients from your veggies, and then went ahead with making my drizzle.

I used the olive oil, garlic and lemon juice. I put it all together and sauteed it in my little skillet. I let it saute just until I could smell the garlic really heating up. You don't want to do it too long but just right. Once the sauce was done, only took about 5 minutes, I waited for the broccoli to finish steaming.

I have to tell you, the house was smelling wonderful right about now. I had an asian chicken in the oven and the sauce sitting on the stove. Delicious!!

So once the broccoli was done I mixed it all together. As you can see from the pictures, the sauce was just enough to coat everything but I think next time I will use less sauce and more broccoli. I don't like it soaked but just lightly spritzed on. Now on to the taste testing. Out of the four of us who tried it, three of us loved it. The flavor was mildly intoxicating and the fourth one didn't care for it because she doesn't really like lemon. Of course she also brought up maybe doing a garlic and herb oil drizzle next time.

I am already planning another tryout:) The oil was bright and bold and I liked how it went well with the other ingredients. I will definitely be using it again and in many more recipes. Maybe drizzled over some chicken breast or in my next linguine. Who knows what recipe I will add it to as it is so versatile!

Now, for those of you who enjoy cooking or you know someone who does and would use this oil, I am going to be giving away one bottle of the Bertolli Classico Olive Oil to one winner. This giveaway is US only and winner will be chosen through random.org. They will have 48 hours to respond or another winner will be chosen. Giveaway ends 9/10.

On Distant Shores” by @SarahSundin | Romantic Weekend Getaway Giveaway, Facebook Party and Blog Tour

Caught between the war raging around them and the battles within, two souls long for peace—and a love that remains true.

Lt. Georgiana Taylor has everything she could want. A boyfriend back home, a loving family, and a challenging job as a flight nurse. But in July 1943, Georgie’s cozy life gets more complicated when she meets pharmacist Sgt. John Hutchinson.
Hutch resents the lack of respect he gets as a noncommissioned serviceman and hates how the war keeps him from his fiancée. While Georgie and Hutch share a love of the starry night skies over Sicily, their lives back home are falling apart. Can they weather the hurt and betrayal? Or will the pressures of war destroy the fragile connection they’ve made?
With her signature attention to detail and her talent for bringing characters together, Sarah Sundin weaves an exciting tale of emotion, action, and romance that will leave you wanting more.

MY REVIEW-The first thing you all have to know is this. I personally don't normally read WWII era books. For some reason I have never liked them and could never get into them. But there is one exception to the rule. And that is this author right here. Sarah Sundin writes WWII novels that don't make me yawn, sigh or doze off. She makes it exciting and interesting to learn more about that time period and I still get in some romance as well:)

This series is all about the nurses. Mainly flight nurses. If you have read the first book in the series you will already have met Georgiana, or Georgie if you are her friend. She is a nurse but doesn't really feel called to be a nurse. She just signed up since Rosie did. And you might remember Hutchinson, or Hutch as many call him. He wants to get the respect and honor that he feels he deserves, but it won't happen unless he gets commissioned. You see, as a pharmacist in the war, he wasn't actually much more than a serviceman. No bars or authority. So we have two people who also happen to be engaged to others, and they meet up one day delivering drugs. No, not the wrong type but the aspirin and other such drugs to help the wounded soldiers. And from there they become friends and then much more. But what about their fiances back home? Will they even survive the war to make it back to each other?

You will learn so many different aspects of history in these novels but it is definitely way more interesting than school history was. I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and have already recommended it to several friends, along with my family. If you don't care for war novels because they are normally boring, try out Sarah Sundin's books. You can't go wrong! Waiting anxiously for the next one in the series:)

CFBA Tour for Into The Whirlwind by Elizabeth Camden!

This week, the

Christian Fiction Blog Alliance

is introducing

Into the Whirlwind

Baker Publishing Group (August 15, 2013)

by

Elizabeth Camden

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

A research librarian and associate professor, Elizabeth Camden has a master’s in history from the University of Virginia and a master’s in library science from Indiana University. She has published several articles for academic publications and is the author of four nonfiction history books. Her ongoing fascination with history and love of literature have led her to write inspirational fiction. Elizabeth lives with her husband in central Florida.

ABOUT THE BOOK

After her father's death, Mollie Knox takes over his watchmaking company and uses her head for business to solidify the good name of the 57th Illinois Watch Company. Her future looks bright until the night her beloved city is destroyed in the legendary Great Chicago Fire. With her world crumbling around her, Molly must do whatever it takes to save her company in the aftermath of the devastating fire.

Zack Kazmarek is an influential attorney with powerful ties to the political, mercantile, and ethnic roots of Chicago. His only weakness is Mollie Knox, a woman who has always been just beyond his reach. However, all bets are off after the fire destroys Chicago, and Mollie is in desperate need of assistance. Just as Zack finally begins to pursue the woman he loves, competition arises in the form of a hero from her past who can provide the help she needs to rise from the ashes.

While Mollie struggles to rebuild, the two men battle for her heart. One has always loved her, but the other has the power to save her. In the race to rebuild the city, can she survive with her business and her heart intact?

If you would like to read the first chapter of Into the Whirlwind, go HERE.

MY REVIEW-Wow! I have enjoyed being able to find new authors and Elizabeth Camden is one my favorites now. Her first novel, The Lady of Bolton Hill, had me hooked at the first chapter. But all her other books have lived up to that one and this new one was no exception. In fact, I think it very well might be my favorite out of them all. Elizabeth has done a lot of research and it shows in how well the story of the Chicago Fire is told. I felt like I was in the middle of it and the panic that ensues, the lives lost along with the buildings and livelihoods of soo many people is brought to life in Into the Whirlwind. And so you don't think this is just a historical novel, there is romance and heartfelt stories within. Don't even get me started on the men who work in the factory like Frank, Declan, Alice and Ulysses and many others. Wonderful story with lots of pathos and emotion! Loved it Elizabeth and can't wait for the next one!

Anita Higman’s “Winter in Full Bloom” Kindle Fire Giveaway and Facebook Party! {8/29

Lily Winter’s wings are folded so tightly around her daughter that when empty nest arrives, she feels she can no longer fly. But Lily’s lonely, widowed life changes in a heartbeat when she goes to visit a woman who is almost a stranger to her-a woman who also happens to be her mother. During their fiery reunion, her mother reveals a dark family secret that she’d been hiding for decades-Lily has an identical twin sister who was put up for adoption when they were just babies.

Without looking back, Lily-with her fear of flying-boards a jumbo jet and embarks on a quest to find her sister which leads half way around the world to Melbourne, Australia. Befriended by imprudent Ausie, he might prove to be the key to finding her sister. But her journey becomes a circle that leads her back home to attempt a family reunion and to find the one dream she no longer imagined possible-the chance to fall in love again.

MY THOUGHTS-This book took a lot of time and patience to get through. And I mean that in a good way. It is a normal size novel but what is inside will drain you and then strengthen and encourage you. I can't even begin to share what I got out of Winter in Full Bloom but I will give you just a glimpse of what made me love it so much, enough to put it on my keeper shelf.

You start the book and immediately meet a little cutie who is helping a woman, Lily Winters, get through her fear of flying. In a very unique way I might add:) If only I had someone like her the first time I flew. But the first part of the story is told in perspective of Lily telling this little girl what happened. In short, she finds out from her mother in a very odd way that she has a sister she never knew. So she flies across the world to Australia to find her. And when she can't find anything about her, she stumbles upon Marcus. I have to tell you, he was probably my favorite character in the whole book. More about that later:) Lily finds her sister but the story doesn't stop there. I don't want to give anything away so I won't tell more about the trail of forgiveness, reconciliation, peace and love.

As I mentioned above, Marcus is my hero, in more ways than one. Not only is he kind and gracious with Lily, even making her laugh when she didn't think she had any more joy, but he is quite the character. I found myself drawn to his quiet strength and his weaknesses. Marcus is a man who has known trouble but isn't letting it drag him down, at least to a point. You will also find something very adorable in a little bookshop part. I loved it and had tears in my eyes! I actually had tears in my eyes more than once. You will laugh and cry but it will be well worth your time reading Winter in Full Bloom. Loved it Anita!!

Blog Tour for Icing on the Cake by Janice Hanna Thompson!

Scarlet isn't sure if she has just the right ingredients for true love--or utter disaster

Scarlet Lindsey is busy making her dreams come true. She's moved her bakery to a prime spot on Galveston's most popular street, she's planning an extravagant cake for her best friend's wedding, and she has a great relationship with Bella Neeley, the island's most popular wedding coordinator. Business is booming and Scarlet is enjoying the ride.

But when Bella's dangerously handsome brother Armando breezes into her life, Scarlet is faced with a sticky situation. Should she stay with the safe, sweet guy who's been a fixture in her life for years? Or will this brash Italian hunk melt her guarded heart?

Fan favorite Janice Thompson is back with more wit, more weddings, and more of what you love best--bridal-business drama laced with laughs.

MY REVIEW-Janice Hanna Thompson is an author I know I can go to when I need a good laugh. Not only are her characters hilarious but I also often relate to them. Oh, and there is a good spiritual lesson thrown in there as well:) Icing on the Cake was no different than her others but I really felt like I knew Scarlet. Not only is she a little bit on the heavier side, but she is worried about it and then realizes it isn't all that big of a deal. The whole part on stage fainting gave me quite a laugh!! Of course, we can't forget the whole part where her aunt gives her a lecture on shirtless men riding around in golf carts. I just died laughing! Now, just so you don't think the whole book is a funny ha ha, there are several parts that had me close to tears. One of which is when Armando opens up. It just really shows you that sometimes what you see on the outside is not how they are on the inside. We all have some secrets that we don't tell everyone about. Anyways, I really loved this one and it was good to see some previous characters. Excellent story and I can't wait for the next one!

Available August 2013 at your favorite bookseller from Revell, a division of Baker Publishing Group
